Assistant Market Manager for on-site farmers‘ market operations at the Saturday and Wednesday Little Italy Mercato, with early morning shifts starting at 5 am and wrapping up between 2 and 3 pm. Additional hours are available for an applicant with social media and/or admin experience. Saturday and Wednesday shifts are required.

Our part-time Market Assistants work as part of a two to five person team to support market participants, provide customer service at the Welcome Booth and keep the market safe and enjoyable for customers, farmers, vendors and staff. 

You will be employed by the Little Italy Association and directed by San Diego Markets, operating San Diego’s favorite farmers’ markets. We value our diverse market team.

Have an interest in real food, farmers’ markets, community outreach, restaurants, event management, and urban San Diego? Work well on a team? Maintain your cool under pressure?

We look for the highest level of dependability and honesty; reliable transportation; ability to lift up to 50 pounds and hand-eye coordination. Bilingual Spanish not required but preferred.

  • San Diego Markets started the Little Italy Mercato, San Diego County’s largest farmers’ market, in 2008, and launched a Wednesday Market there in August, 2021.

    We launched and have consulted with many additional farmers markets in San Diego.

    Most recently, we brought a market back to downtown Chula Vista, a community that has been without a market since 2017.

  • Saturday 6:30 am to 2:30 or 3:00 pm is required, additional hours are available for a team member with social media experience, or available on Wednesdays and/or Sundays.

  • • Lift and carry tables, pop up tents, tables and barricades – must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Experience putting up a tent means bonus points!

    • Direct farmers and vendors during set up and throughout the market, answering questions and maintaining site rules.

    • Contribute support to traffic safety procedures to separate attendees and vehicles.

    • Answer questions and provide information for farmers, vendors, shoppers and occasional inspectors during the markets. Calmly direct requests, complaints, and emergencies to operating managers.

    • Provide excellent customer relations, collect email addresses and sell merchandise at market Welcome Booths.

    • Manage CalFresh EBT and Market Match transactions and record keeping with welcoming and instructive attitude.

    • Manage and record CalFresh EBT and Market Match redemption accurately

    • Coordinate and assist with special events and complete other tasks as needed

    • Optional: hours currently available for daily social media posting

  • • A strong interest in food, events and community and experience related to any of those fields is preferred. Retail and restaurant experience is typically valuable.

    • Good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to relate to a diverse group of people, from farmers, vendors and booth staff to shoppers, foodies, sponsors, neighborhood residents and government inspectors.

    • Accurate and honest cash management

    • Familiarity with Google Drive for accessing maps. Additional hours available for an applicant with strong email skills, social media and/or Mailchimp experience.

    • Bilingual Spanish fluency is not required, but is welcome

    • The right person, with experience leading by example and motivating a team, could advance over the long term.

  • Hourly salary range is $18 to $24, negotiable depending on skills, experience and productivity, with rate increases possible for successful team members following reviews. Additional hours, advancement and compensation possible with increased experience and capabilities.
